The Endless Journey: Major Retrospective of Works by Igor Snegur
Venue: Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Russian Academy of Arts,
Tsereteli Art Gallery
21 Prechistenka street, Moscow
The Russian Academy of Arts presents a major retrospective of the renowned master of modern Russian avant-garde Igor Snegur. Entitled “The Endless Journey” the exhibition features over 120 works created by the artist for his half a century creative activity.
The inner concept of works by Igor Snegur is based on the synthesis of mystic ideas of Russian symbolism and plastic forms of suprematism of Kazimir Malevich. In different years the critics considered him an artist of the second wave of Russian avant-garde, but his works are not limited by the frameworks of one direction or style.
Igor Snegur says about his work: “The truth is not in a picture, but in the subject it deals with. The truth is the essence that is embedded in the picture: a special thing which an artist tries to express by the language of painting: through colors and forms. Painting is the same language as the language of music, literature, dancing. But it has its own laws: only visual perception avoiding odors, sounds and movements. Painting is a statics, a captured moment”.
Igor Snegur was born in Moscow in 1935. He was actively involved into art process since the late 1950-s, participated in the scandalous exhibition in Manezh dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artists in 1962 that caused the indignation of Nikita Khrushchev, in exhibitions of abstract art by members of the Moscow studio of Eli Belyutin. Simultaneously, in 1960-1964 he studied at the graphic department of the Moscow Institute of Printing Industry. In 1975 Snegur’s works were exhibited at the famous vernissage of avant-garde artists in VDNKH, in the late 1970-s Igor Snegur organized an art group “20 Moscow Artists” which annual art shows were held in Malaya Grusinskaya street in 1978-1988.
Igor Snegur also worked for cinema and theater, created book graphics and posters. In 1988 he opened the first in Moscow private gallery “Mars” and in 1993 set up a magazine – catalog “Art-Panorama”. More than 30 solo exhibitions of Igor Snegur were held in Russia and other countries. He was an active participant of more than 50 group exhibitions. His works are in collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, state museums of fine arts in Khabarovsk, Kostroma, Orel, Vladivostok, Yaroslavl, as well in many private collections.
