On July 26, 2010 at the Kremlin award ceremony President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev presented state awards to prominent representatives of Russian politics, science and culture. The President of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the USSR and the Russian Federation Zurab Tsereteli was decorated with the Order for Services to Motherland 1st Rank.

In various years the winners of this prestigious award were Salvador Dali, Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, and now it will be presented to Tsereteli for his contribution to the promotion of cultural ties between Russia and the United States. From America Zurab Tsereteli will go to Paris to foster closer relations between Russia and France. On the eve of his visit the sculptor spoke about history, art education, royalties and Andrei Voznesensky with RIA Novosti reporter Ann Shelepova.

The American Gold Medal of Honor Was Presented to Zurab Tsereteli

The Annual National Arts Club’s Gold Medal of Honor has been awarded to Zurab Tsereteli for his significant role in the promotion of art. Zurab Tsereteli is the first Russian artist who received this one of the most prestigious American awards in the field of culture. The Gold Medal of Honor was presented to the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli on June 4 by the National Arts Club’s President O. Aldon James at the ceremony within the framework of the annual Festival “Our Legacy” launched in New York. Aldon James noted that in various years the award winners had been Salvador Dali, Robert Rauschenberg, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein and other eminent figures of arts, reports ITAR-TASS.

On May 11, 2010 in Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street, the Ambassador of the French Republic to the Russian Federation Jean de Gliniasty presented the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli with the National Order of the Legion of Honor. Gift of Zurab Tsereteli to the City of Yaroslavl

In honor of the 1000th anniversary of Yaroslavl the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli will present as a gift to the city a bronze bear that is a symbol of Yaroslavl. It will be a centerpiece of the city park in honor of its 1000th anniversary on the embankment of the Kotorosl River. Zurab Tsereteli has proposed his own artistic design – the bear standing on two legs is holding a big fish. The three-meter tall sculpture has already been completed and appreciated by the city authorities.

Zurab Tsereteli is a Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor

The highest decoration of France will be presented to the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. The National Order of the Legion of Honor (Ordre national de la Legion d’honneur) was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and is awarded by the President of France. In his letter dated February 1, 2010 the French President Nicolas Sarkozy has specially noted: “This authoritative decoration which I have considered it necessary to confer on you from my personal reserves of crosses is an expression of gratitude for your services to this country and proved devotion to France”.

On December 11, 2008 Tsereteli Art Gallery will present the 4th International Festival of Children’s Artworks “Thousands of Suns” featuring over 500 paintings by young artists aged four to seventeen from eighteen countries. Zurab Tsereteli Is a Member of the Council of Trustees for the Memorial to Dmitri Pozharsky to Be Recreated in Suzdal

In St. Euthymius monastery in Suzdal on the National Unity Day, November 4, the Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal Eulogius consecrated the cross installed on the burial place of the national hero Dmitri Pozharsky (1578-1642) and the foundation stone for the marble chapel of Dmitri Pozharsky to be recreated according to the original destroyed in 1933. The ceremony was attended by Georgy Poltavchenko, Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Central Federal District; Alexander Avdeev, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation; Nikolai Vinogradov, Governor of Vladimir Region. The chapel is planned to be completed by November 4th, 2009.

November 4: National Unity Day in Russia

On November 4th, 2008 Russia celebrates the National Unity Day: the state holiday commemorating the liberation of Moscow from Polish invaders in 1612 by people’s volunteer corps. On November 4, 2005 the focus of the celebrations was in Nizhni Novgorod, where there was an unveiling ceremony for the replica of the monument to Minin and Pozharsky created by Zurab Tserteli for Nizhni Novgorod. The monument stands in front of the Cathedral of John the Baptist, the place where Kuzma Minin called to people for the national uprising and joining the people’s volunteer corps.

On July 14, 2008 Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts had a meeting with Paul Kulikovski, great-grandson of grand duchess Olga Alexandrovna, sibling of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. Paul Kulikovski is an economist and financier. He lives in Denmark, where Olga Romanova resided till the end of her life. The meeting has been also attended by Elena Ryurikova, director-general of a Charity Foundation set up in Moscow in 2006 by Dmitri Romanov, great great-grandson of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I. He is a president of the Foundation.

On March 17, 2008 Tsereteli Art Gallery presents a sculptural composition: Wives of the Decembrists. The Viva Academia art project of Omsk Regional M. Vrubel Museum of Fine Arts in honor of the 250th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Arts has been highly appreciated by the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. He noted the high professional level of the art project which comprised three exhibitions: Russian Graphic Art of the 18th-20th century; Russian Prints of the Late 19th – Early 20th century; Viva Academia! Painting, Sculpture of the 19th-21th Century. They offered a groundbreaking exploration of the role of the Academy since its foundation. On show were 160 exhibits from the Omsk Regional Museum collection, many of them were presented to the public for the first time.

Words of Gratitude from the United Nations Organization

The unveiling ceremony for the bust of Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (from September 2002 to August 2003) who lost his life in the bombing of UN headquarters in Iraq on August 19, 2003, was attended by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR THE MONUMENT TO THE STRUGGLE AGAINST WORLD TERRORISM, SEPTEMBER 11, 2006

On September 11, 2006 in the United States in the city of Bayonne, New Jersey there was a dedication ceremony for the monument to the struggle against world terrorism. The monument by Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of Russia, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador stands opposite lower Manhattan where the World Trade Center towers stood and about three thousand people became victims of the attacks. The monumental composition was presented as a gift from the Russian President Vladimir Putin, the people of Russia to the people of the United States on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy symbolizing, that Russia, which also experienced acts of terrorism not once, shared the grief of losses with the United States.
