Events and Layers of the Macedonian Soil: Solo Show of the Macedonian Artist Gligor Cemerski at the Russian Academy of Arts

The Russian Academy of Arts in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Macedonia in the Russian Federation, Culture Ministry of the Republic of Macedonia, Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Gral Gallery presents a solo show of Gligor Cemerski, the celebrated painter, graphic artist, master of mosaic, Member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.

Gligor Cemerski was born in 1940 in Kavadarci, Republic of Macedonia and studied in Skopie, Belgrade and Paris. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1963 and completed his post-graduate studies at the same Academy in 1965. In 1969 and 1970 he held a fellowship and residence in Paris from the French Government. Since then, he has often worked and exhibited in Paris. Between 1983 and 2003 he was one of the permanent exhibitors in the Galerie du Fleuve. Other study visits include Egypt, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and USA.

In 1962 there was the artist’s first solo show and since the 1960-s he has had over sixty solo exhibitions in cities of Yugoslavia and Macedonia, in Paris, Rome, Istanbul, Alexandria, Sophia, Prague, Graz, Bucharest, Moscow, Madrid, Copenhagen, Mexico, New York,  Hague, Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow…

Many contemporaries of Gligor Cemerski – artists, writers, art historians and art critics honor him as a classic and highly appreciate Cemerski’s creative work in respect to his extraordinary personality and those ideal and aesthetic principles which he practices. He has become one of the few artists, who managed to reach the heights of the historical context of Macedonian fine arts, he is recognized as a real bard of Macedonia.

In his works Gligor Cemerski revives the fate of his native people depicting dramatic events in the nation’s history also represented in Macedonian epic poems and legends. Mythical creatures, dreams and visions become a reality in his works. His paintings express the human aspiration for being victorious over chaos and fear of the unknowable. Ancient frescoes that adorned medieval Macedonian churches have always been the sources of the artist’s inspiration.
