February 16 – March 6, 2016
Exhibition halls of the Russian Academy of Arts
21 Prechistenka street, Moscow

The Russian Academy of Arts presents an exhibition of sculptural works by the Honored Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Dmitry Tugarinov timed to the master’s 60th anniversary.

The Laureate of the Moscow Komsomol Prize, Chevalier of the Order of St. Ann III rank, participant of the Quadriennale of Contemporary Art in France  (2014) – these are some of the numerous honors and awards of the renowned sculptor.

Dmitry Tugarinov has a special place in the Russian sculptural school. He is called “Gogol in sculpture”. Similar to works by the great novelist, Tugarinov’s sculptures are extremely trendy though they contain many familiar features in them. Tugarinov and his sculptures exist in some mythological space depicting a special world full of extravagancy, meaningful images and eternal irony. Dmitry Tugarinov is the only sculptor whose two statues of Alexander Suvorov were placed in Switzerland high in the Alps in the pass of Saint Gottard - the crossing of the victorious Russian army in the war against Napoleon troops taking into account that in Switzerland the law prohibits to install monuments to foreigners and military men.

For his creative life Tugarinov has created more than 600 easel and monumental works. The exposition in the exhibition halls of the Russian Academy of Arts is conceptually divided into 10 sections devoted to various themes. The center piece of the first hall is his well-known work “Slippers” – a small girl in her mother’s slippers walking in the improvised dump of sculptures. The third hall is devoted to the master’s key work – the afore-mentioned monument to Alexander Suvorov. The tenth hall entitled The Birch Grove is a kind of a pavilion for contemplation and comprehension of the remarkable creative work by Dmitry Tugarinov.

Of special interest is a hall exhibiting works by Dmitry Tugarinov’s wife – sculptor Aphina Popandopulo. For almost thirty years Popandopulo and Tugarinov have been working together in one studio, but as it can be seen at the exhibition, it does not prevent them from creating their own artistic worlds.
