The Russian Academy of Arts presents a retrospective of the celebrated master of medal art, People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Gennady Pravotorov featuring his medals and plaquettes  of various years.

Gennady Pravotorov was born in 1941, in 1968 he graduated from  S. Stroganov Moscow Higher College of Arts and Industry. Among the main themes of his works are the heroic past of Russia and the history of Russian state. In the 1980-s he created a big wooden relief on the motifs of the “Tale of Igor’s Campaign”. He is an author of a vast series of medals and plaquettes dedicated to outstanding Russian figures who brought glory to the homeland, these are medal portraits of Kirill and Methodius, Dmitry Mendeleev, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and many others. Pravotorov has created more than ten memorial plaques to Ivan Bunin and Yury Kazakov in Moscow, Anton Chekhov in Sri Lanka, Dmitry Mendeleev, Sergey Remezov, the Tsar’s family in Tobolsk, etc. To mark the 170-th anniversary of the wedding of Alexander Pushkin with Natalia Goncharova the artist made a memorial plaque for the Greater Church of the Ascention at Nikitsky Gates in Moscow.

For Gennady Pravotorov a medal is not simply an artwork, but a kind of historical monument. The artist’s striving for a detailed and comprehensive exposing of a theme often results in his diptychs (diptych “1812”) and triptychs (“The 800th anniversary of the “Tale of Igor’s Campaign”). In honor of the 250th anniversary of the Imperial – Russian Academy of Arts Gennady Pravotorov created a series of 17 medals dedicated to presidents of the Academy starting from Ivan Shuvalov to Zurab Tsereteli.  Well-known is his extraordinary series “The Romanov Dynasty” of 20 medals depicting the 300 years of the Russian imperial family.

In his series “The Patriarchs of Moscow and All Russia” the artist instead of traditional round medals has preferred plaquettes and gave them a form of a small icon. The series consists of 16 plaquettes – portraits of all the patriarchs from Job to Kirill.

Gennady Pravotorov is a holder of many Russian and international awards including a Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts.
