THREADS - SIMPLE AND ETERNAL, FINE AND UNBROKEN: SOLO SHOW OF WORKS BY THE PEOPLE’S ARTIST OF RUSSIA NATALIA MURADOVA

The exhibition at the Russian Academy of Arts presents unique author’s works by the People’s Artist of Russia, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Natalia Muradova. Entitled “Threads – Simple and Eternal, Fine and Unbroken. The Shreds of Torn Time and Picturesque Patches of Feelings” the exhibition showcases a diverse and impressive range of the master’s work. The larger part of the display includes her works of recent years to be shown to the public for the first time. These are sketches, watercolors, tapestries, textile bas-reliefs and compositions executed in the artist’s unique technique.

In her philosophical works Natalia Muradova experiments with color and materials, fabrics, threads, texture creating original 3-D compositions of special decorativeness and plastic.

The Doctor of Art History Liudmila Kazakova writes about the master’s work: “In fact, each of her works is a picturesque textile canvas, most often of impressive size with complex texture. The content usually has a philosophical subtext, ideas and themes result fr om personal experience and study of art history. The artist’s work presents a vast palette of textile art - classical weaving, prints, painting, embroidery, 3-D needlework. She freely plays with techniques, invents original methods such as incorporation of the author’s photos, printing on canvas, imitation of tapestry and many others. In her mosaic compositions Muradova uses a variety of fabrics, laces, beads, embroidery, foil, introduces fragments of weaving, includes real objects as signs of memory and symbols of events”.

The artist’s works are full of diverse associations: they refer us to the origins of Russian culture, treasures of world art, unforgettable beauty of monuments of architecture, fine poetic words and  show multiple facets of personal experiences of the author embodied in the material.

Muradova does not lim it herself in the visual media often combining classical methods with today’s technological innovations thus achieving a particular expressiveness of her works. Twisting fine and unbroken threads of brilliant skills and boundless fantasy, the artist creates a kind of tapestry of an extraordinary creative personality.  

According to Natalia Muradova: “…I like a chance, rampant but organized in a new reality of the objective world with the help of fabrics, threads, colors, paper… catching a moment in the state of nature I string impressions following the idea, mood and material…”

Natalia Muradova was born in Lodz (Poland) in 1946. She graduated from the Moscow Textile Institute (A. Kosygin Moscow State University) in 1971. In addition to her active creative work Muradova gives lectures and master classes, participates in research conferences. For more than 20 years the artist has been a Russian representative and curator- advisor to the International Triennale of Art Textile in Lodz.

Natalia Muradova is an author of art textile ranging from small souvenir forms and exhibition panels to theater curtains and tapestries in public buildings, state entities. Her works adorn the interiors of the Residence of the Russian President in the Kremlin, Supreme Court in Povarskaya street, the State Tretyakov Gallery.

For the Supreme Court of Russia Muradova has created a hand woven tapestry “Time” forming the space of its library, which sketch can be seen at the exhibition. On display is also a photograph of her 50-m tapestry “Lights of Moscow” for the  Residence of the Russian President produced at the renowned French tapestry factory  in Aubusson under the supervision of the author. Natalia Muradova is the only Russian artist who has ever been honored to work at this unique place. Her sketches and cartoons for tapestries are in the museum collection of the Aubusson factory together with drawings by Antoine Watteau, Francois Boucher, Jean Lurcat.

For over 20 years of the creative partnership with the leading masters of monumental decorative art Timur Sazhin and Lidia Fomina, Muradova has been involved in such major projects as the interior decoration of the USSR Embassy in Paris, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Olympic Village, the State Tretyakov Gallery.
