Zurab Tsereteli Took Part in the 10th Annual Meeting of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors

The UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Zurab Tsereteli participated in the 10th Annual Meeting of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors that took place in the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on June 24, 2010. The meeting traditionally devoted to the discussion of urgent problems and efficient means for the implementation of UNESCO goals was inaugurated by the UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.

Irina Bokova has thanked the attendees and all those who work for the execution of the Organization’s programs, who take part in such events as concerts, exhibitions to contribute to the mobilization of efforts in support for UNESCO, who render their assistance by setting up local broadcasting stations and children’s educational centers, participate in actions against HIV/AIDS, provide help to children in need.

Zurab Tsereteli is one of few UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors taking part in the annual meetings for the 10th time. According to the UNESCO Headquarters’ information, at present there are over 40 UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors representing various fields of knowledge, creative and public activity. Among them are Vitaly Ignatenko - President of the World Association of the Russian Language Press, Director-General of ITAR-TASS Agency; Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva - the First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliev Foundation; the French astronaut Patrick Baudry; President of the South Asia Foundation Madanjeet Singh; Nobel Peace Prize Winner Nelson Mandela and other celebrity advocates who spread the ideals of UNESCO through their name and fame.

UNESCO is a unique organization established soon after the end of World War II. This year it is marking its 65th anniversary and includes 193 Member-States 7 Associated Members.

One of the topics for discussion at the above meeting has been an implementation of the program of the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures celebrated in 2010, which goal is to build “the defenses of peace in the minds of men”. The calendar of events includes large-scale actions to be held by UNESCO in partnership with its Member-States in the fields of its competence, namely education, science, culture and communication.

The participants of the annual meeting of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors got acquainted with the show “Dialogue of Cultures in the Space of Academic School” arranged by the Russian Academy of Arts. It was opened in the exhibition halls of the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on June 21, 2010.
