THE 581TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND OFFICIAL APPROVAL OF ZURAB TSERETELY AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS
On February 15, 2017 at the Russian Academy of Arts there was a General Assembly aimed at summing up the activities of the Academy in the period from March, 2016 till February, 2017, the election of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts for the next term and planning of events in honor of the 260th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Arts.
The Presidium of the General Assembly included the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli; Vice-Presidents of the Russian Academy of Arts Yury Berezovsky, Victor Kalinin, Tair Salakhov; the First Deputy to the Chairman of the Culture Department of the State Duma of the RF J.D. Kobzon; the First Deputy to the Culture Ministry of the Russian Federation V.V. Aristarkhov, the Head of the Culture Department of the City of Moscow A.V. Kibovsky, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Azerbaijan Republic to the Russian Federation Polad Bul-Bul Ogly, poet Andey Dementiev.
In his speech Zurab Tseretely expressed his deep concern about the development of the Russian academic art school and preservation of the historical integrity of the structure of the Russian Academy of Arts as the oldest in Russia educational and research art entity. He also told the attendees about his latest achievements, in particular, the completion in Puerto-Rico of his 126 m tall monument “The Birth of the New World”. The members of the Presidium of the General Assembly in their speeches highly appreciated the activity of Zurab Tsereteli as an art creator and public figure, his significant role in the promotion of art as an efficient means of fighting for peace and strengthening of cultural relations among nations.
In the debates participated the leading masters of Russian fine arts and architecture, heads of art institutes, educational entities and art production workshops who focused on such urgent problems as maintaining the high level of academic art education, promotion of young artists, efficient introduction of new technologies into art practices, widening of researches in contemporary art processes and the work of today’s artists, the development of regional branches of the Russian Academy of Arts, etc.
The General Assembly unanimously elected the acting President of the Russian Academy of Arts, the People’s Artist of the USSR and Russia, Hero of the Socialist Labor, Laureate of the State Prizes of the USSR and Russia, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Zurab Tsereteli as the President of the Russian Academy of Arts for the next term.
On March 9, 2017 through his edict N 422-r the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Dmitri Medvedev approved Zurab K. Tsereteli in the Post of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts.
