PRESENTATION OF THE BOOK “SPACE OF THE ICON. ICONOGRAPHY AND HIEROTOPY”: TO THE ACADEMICIAN ALEXEY LIDOV’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY

We kindly invite you to participate in the presentation of the latest printed edition “Space of the Icon. Iconography and Hierotopy. To A.M. Lidov’s 60th Anniversary” as well as in the scientific convention confined to the anniversary of the art historian and Byzantinist, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Alexey M. Lidov. The meeting will take place on March 6, 2019 at 16.30 in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (21 Prechistenka street, Moscow).

The collection is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Alexey Lidov, a prominent art historian and Byzantinist, it contains works of his colleagues related to Lidov’s research interests. Apart from his numerous studies on Byzantine iconography, Lidov has contributed an original concept of hierotopy, which is a new field of studies in cultural history investigating theory and practice of creation of sacred spaces. The iconography and hierotopy of the Christian world are the subject of 14 papers of this volume. These new studies discuss the phenomena of Byzantine and Old Russian architecture, origins of most important symbolic images, rare iconographic devices and ritual practices related to the understanding of the space as the special icon. The book reflects new ideas that have appeared in the world history of art due to hierotopy, and also a theoretical conceptualization of hierotopical terms offered by Lidov such as “spatial icons” and “image-paradigms”. The book collects only the Russian-language articles. An English-language collection is now being prepared for publication in the USA.
