Show of Sculptures by Yuri Ishkhanov (1929-2009) in Krasnoyarsk

The Urals, Siberia and Far East Regional Department of the Russian Academy of Arts presents a show of works by the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation  Yuri Ishkhanov (1929-2009) organized in memory of the sculptor’s 80th birth anniversary.

Yuri P. Ishkhanov was born in Kizlyar (Dagestan) on December 30th, 1929.  In 1959 he graduated from I. Repin Leningrad State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. From 1960 till 1964 he perfected his skills in the sculpture workshop of the USSR Academy of Arts. Since 1960-s, the sculptor was more than once on the Board and a member of the Secretariat of the USSR Union of Artists, was twice elected a Head of the Krasnoyarsk department of the Russian Federation Union of Artists,  was a member of the Commission of the President of the Russian Federation for the State Prizes in Literature and Arts. Yuri Ishkhanov was a holder of many honorary awards including an Order of Honor, golden medal of the Russian Academy of Arts, Medal for Valorous Work, Medal for Services to the City of Krasnoyarsk and others.  

Twenty years ago Yuri Ishkhanov was among the founders of the Krasnoyarsk State Art Institute where he taught at the sculpture department for many years and raised several generations of the Siberian sculptors.

In 1988 on the initiative of Yuri Ishkhanov at the Russian Academy of Arts was established the Urals, Siberia and Far East Regional Department which he headed  for the last fifteen years till 2009. Yuri Ishkhanov was a Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts.  

The show includes Yuri Ishkhanov’s sculptures from his family private collection and holdings of V. Surikov Krasnoyarsk Art Museum, as well as the sculptor’s  drawings and sketches that have never been exhibited to the public before.
