The monumental wall painting is of special significance in religious art. Closely connected with the architecture it physically and spatially surrounds a viewer, absorbing him into the world of its images. The rebirth of the broken tradition of canonical religious art has started in Russia since the late 1940s. Today, the religious painting is taught at several institutes thus proving, that the religious art and, in particular, monumental wall painting are being actively promoted. For 15 years the Chair of Monumental Art of the Religious Arts Department of St. Tikhon Orthodox Humanitarian University has worked out its own art style and language. The Chair boasts of its graduates many of whom are members of the Union of Artists, frequent exhibitors in all-Russian and international art shows.
