Andata/Ritorno: Painting, Graphic Works, Sculpture by Bruno Bruni in Tsereteli Art Gallery

Organized within Russia-Italy Cross Culture Year, the exhibition “Andata/Ritorno” in Tsereteli Art Gallery is a major retrospective of works by the celebrated Italian artist Bruno Bruni.

Bruno Bruni (b. 1935) studied at the Instituto d’Arte di Pesaro in 1952-1959. In 1961-1966 he upgraded his skills at the University of Arts in Hamburg, Germany where taught such artists as Georg Gresko, Paul Wunderlich, Horst Janssen, Arnold Hausner and art critic Hans Theodore Fleming. Bruno Bruni considers Renato Guttuso as one of his teachers. Together with several young artists Bruni founded in Hamburg a group SOOP – against commercialization of art.

Bruni has been awarded the “Ugolini” Prize. In the mid-1960s he was granted the “Lichtwark Prize” and in 1977 won the International “Senefelder Prize”. Since 2002 he has been a holder of the title “Chevalier of the Italian Republic”. Since 1959 Bruno Bruni has had numerous solo shows in many cities of the world including Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Cologne, Milan, New York, Rome, Tokyo.

Bruno Bruni’s paintings, sculpture, prints and china are in collections of a number of European museums of modern art, as well as in many private collections.

The title of the exhibition contains a motif of Bruni’s constant travel between his native Italy and Germany where he has been living for many years, and his adherence to his favorite topics and theme series resulting from many decades of his creative work. The master has been conducting a continual dialogue with the Italian and North European Old Masters and frequently turning to the Renaissance, mannerism and baroque. Along with the above, in many of Bruni’s works one can sense the tradition of surrealism, that takes a special place in the 20th century art. In comparison with other modern artists, Bruni remains true to figurative art and persistently develops the line originated from the classics and is seen through today’s vision.
