Under the auspices of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples the Italian Institute of Culture in Moscow, the Russian Academy of Arts and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art present a show of paintings and sculptures by Christian Leperino entitled CHIAROSCURO. The main theme of the young Italian artist’s work is complex interactions between the city space and “topography” of a man, as well as a portrait of today’s megalopolis with its history and problems, cityscapes and urban environment.

Born in Naples in 1979, Christian Leperino graduated fr om the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples wh ere he majored in art history and theory. In 2003 he was awarded the Arte Fiera Under 30 Prize set up by the Art Fair in Bologna that provided him with a possibility to study and work in Kunst Werke in Berlin. His stay in Berlin deepened his understanding of art and proved his preference – the art of expressionism. The artist became interested in philosophical and artistic understanding of an artist’s fate in the time of innovative technologies and his place in today’s processes. The major cycles of that period are Human Project (Naples, 2007), Empty Lands of Desire (Naples, 2007) and his first album “Dust”.

At present, the artist works both in traditional techniques and new art media, creates sculpture, painting, graphic art, objects and installations. His recent exhibitions include: “Human Escape” in the Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2010), “Cityscape/12” in the Italian Pavilion at the 54th Venetian Biennale of Contemporary Art in 2011, “Landscapes of Memory” (2012), participation in the international group exhibition “Ecology Earth Art” – 2007 in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Saitama (Japan) and many others. In 2006 in association with other artists Christian Leperino was involved in the creation of a documentary film “Crossing a Painted Vesuvius” (Italy). His works are in museums of his native Naples and other cities.

The centerpieces of the display at Tsereteli Art Gallery are the artist’s big canvases inspired by the constructivism originated in the Russian architecture of the 1920-s and internationally recognized. According to Christian Leperino’s words, “these are my reflections on that historical period of the rise of architecture and city planning, which gave the world the whole school. For me it was interesting to comprehend the legacy of the 20th century architects that is of great value not only as a layer of visual material, but also allows to build a bridge between the recent and remote past”.
