Successors of Traditions. Plein-Air Painting in the Lyceum: Exhibition in Honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Moscow State Art Lyceum of the Russian Academy of Arts

In 2014 the Moscow State Academy Art Lyceum is celebrating its 75th anniversary. It was set up in 1939 on the initiative of prominent figures of Russian culture: academicians I. Grabar, V. Baksheev, P. Konchalovsli, D. Moor, S. Gerasimov,  K.Yuon. Named the Moscow Secondary Art School it worked under the patronage of the People’s Artists of the USSR V.V. Barsova, V.I. Kachalov, I.M. Moskvin; Heroes of the Soviet Uni on pilots M.M. Gromov, A.B. Yumashev, explorers of the Arctic region E. T. Krenkel, P.P. Shirshov, E.K. Fyodorov. The school was founded on the disciplines of painting, sculpture and architecture and continued the traditions of academic art education. Among its alumni are distinguished masters of Russian fine arts such as G. Korzhev, V. Ivanov, P. Nikonov, A. Osipov,  P. Ossovsky, O. Savostyuk, V. Sidorov,  I. Sorokin, A. Tutunov, V. Stozharov,  N. Andronov, A. Tkachev, A. Shmarinov, N. Nesterova, T. Nazarenko, S. Andriyaka, M. Kugach, S. Alimov, E. Maximov, V. Bubnov, A. Marts, V. Nesterenko, I. Starzhenetskaya, L. Shepelev and many others.  

In 1951 the School through a decree of the USSR Art Committee became a division of the USSR Academy of Arts (now Russian Academy of Arts). In 1992 it was transformed into the Moscow State Academy Art Lyceum of the Russian Academy of Arts.

The most gifted children with the four-year experience in the primary school are sel ected to become students of the Lyceum for the free of charge seven-year training. The diploma of the secondary art education allows the graduates to enroll the higher art educational entities, including V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute and I. Repin St. Petersburg State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

The painting on location is an important component of the training process. Annually students traditionally go to various parts of Russia for their summer practice under the supervision of their teachers-artists. Of big importance are their studies of the nature in different conditions. In recent years the geography has expanded, they visit CIS and other countries to copy masterpieces of world art.
The exhibition entitled “Successors of Traditions. The Plein-Air Painting in the Lyceum” presents more than 300 plein-air paintings and graphic works of the Lyceum’s students from its Museum funds chronologically covering the period from the 1940s till today.
