The Russian Academy of Arts presents a major retrospective of graphic works by the People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Winner of I. Repin State Prize of Russia Alexey Shmarinov timed to the artist’s 85th anniversary.

On display at the Russian Academy of Arts are the artist’s works of various years including the well-known watercolors fr om “Russia – My Love” series, prints from the cycles “Heroes of Russian People - XIII-XIV Centuries”, “On the Field of Kulikovo”, “Zadonschina”, lithographs and drawings created during the artist’s   numerous trips across Russia and around the world, as well as photographs from his personal archives.

Alexey Shmarinov was born in Moscow in 1933 and since his childhood used to live in Abramtsevo near Moscow.  In 1958 he graduated from V. Surikov State Art Institute. He began his career as a painter, but soon became engaged mainly in graphics, book illustration and design. The artist is equally perfect in all the graphic techniques. Over time, watercolor has become the artist’s favorite one.

An ardent traveler, Alexey Shmarinov visited the most remote corners of Russia. Starting from the 1950s, there was a series of amazing, romantic journeys: Arkhangelsk, Dikson, New Land, East-Siberian Islands – on the ice breaker; the fabulous and foggy Bay of Providence. He also traveled in the jungle of East Pakistan, Egypt, India, Ceylon, Indonesia, Vietnam as a sailor on merchant ships. Later in the 1960s there were Italy, Karelia and Kola Peninsular; alone in Kamchatka – on foot, on horseback, by small planes and boats. In the 1970-s  - the Near East, Central Africa, Khartum, Addis-Ababa, Lake Tana; hunting in the Savannah for pharaohs. And of course - Central Russia which the artist has walked along ad across with a gun and a dog.

Since 1955 till today Alexey Shmarinov has been a frequent participant of exhibitions in Russia and other countries. This is his 55th solo show. The master’s solo exhibitions were of great success in many countries of the world and 25 of them – in Germany, France, Spain, Austria, United States, Czechoslovakia, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, etc.

Great are the services of Alexey Shmarinov in teaching and aesthetic upbringing of children, in preservation of monuments of Russian culture. Since 1997 Alexey Shmarinov has been heading the Creative Graphic Workshop of the Russian Academy of Arts wh ere many dozens of young artists representing today Russian graphic art in this country and abroad have upgraded their skills.

Alexey Shmarinov has an outstanding literary talent and authored several books and articles which themes are not limited to problems of art. His book “Abramtsevo - My Fate” published in 2013 is a result of the artist’s many years of hard work.

The creative and teaching activity of Alexey Shmarinov has been highly appreciated by a lot of state honors and awards: The Order of Honor; Honorary Mention of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Order for Services to Motherland 4th grade, the Order of Friendship and others. For his active involvement in the Commission for Artistic Decoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow he was awarded the Oder of St. Sergius of Radonezh of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The creative work of the master is known and recognized in many counties. Among his international awards are “The Golden Laurel” of the Artists’ Society in Austria  “Kunstlerhaus”, prestigious German Prize of Peter Ludwig and the Silver Medal of the Prime-Minister of Bavaria Joseph Straus. He is also a Corresponding Member of the Society of Art Workers of Austria, Corresponding Member of the International Munich Press Club.

Works by Alexey Shmarinov are in collections of more than 45 art museums in Russia and CIS countries, seven major German museums as well as in private collections in Russia, Germany, the United States, France, Austria, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Japan and other countries.
