PROJECT “EARTH AND SKY”: PAINTING OF KONSTANTIN SUTYAGIN AND MUSIC OF IVAN SOKOLOV

The multimedia project “Earth and Sky” to be presented in the Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Russian Academy of Arts by MastArt Gallery is an attempt to understand the New Testament through painting and music. The artist and writer Konstantin Sutyagin and composer Ivan Sokolov in their own manner contemplate on eternal themes of humanity trying to become participants of the events of ancient history. Both the artist and the composer are not illustrating textbook stories, but telling about the Divine presence in everyman’s fate.

It has taken them five years to complete the project comprising Konstantin Sutyagin’s series of more than 100 pictures and Ivan Sokolov’s cycle consisting of 31 piano preludes, recitative and epilogue. The creative work went on simultaneously in the form of a dialogue and resulted in the unique harmony of painting, music and word.

Konstantin Sutyagin was born in Ufa in 1964. He is a participant of more than 100 exhibitions. His works are in collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, Russian Museum and other major museum collections in Russia and other countries. Sutyagin is an author of a number of books dedicated to interactions of an artist with the society and a Winner of the New Pushkin Prize for the Harmony of Word and Image.

Ivan Sokolov was born in Moscow in 1960 into the family of the noted art historian Gleb Sokolov. The talented pianist who gives concerts all over the world, he is a teacher of the Moscow Conservatoire and the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music, an author of original modern classical music.
