The monument to Feodor Mihailovich Dostoevsky was opened in Dresden.

  The monument to Feodor Mihailovich Dostoevsky was opened in Dresden. The writer visited this city several times and lived for a long time there in the second half of the XIX century. President of Russia Vladimir Putin and chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel were presented at the ceremony of the monument’s opening.

   The monument was created by the famous Moscow sculptor Alexandr Rukavishnikov.

   The head of the Russian state in his speech at the ceremony expressed his gratefulness to the administration of the city and Saxonia, and also to the government of FRG.

   “Especially pleasant is the fact that the year of the 800-th anniversary of the city was declarated as the year of Russia by the administration of Dresden”, - said the President.

   Vladimir Putin noticed that the opening of the monument to the famous Russian writer shows that “we live in a united European cultural space”.

   Angela Merkel, from her side, expressed the hope that people, which will see the monument, would like to read writings of Dostoevsky.
