UNESCO Picasso Gold Medal has been awarded to Zurab Tsereteli

On March 23, 2007 the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli was awarded the UNESCO Picasso Gold Medal. The UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura noted, that in the year of the 250th Anniversary of the foundation of the Russian Academy of Arts this would be a fitting manner to pay tribute to the venerable and outstanding institution as well as to the remarkable personal contribution of Zurab Tsereteli in developing the Russian Academy of Arts as one of the most prestigious institutions devoted to art education and to promotion of cultural dialogue at the international level and the exchange of ideas between artists of all European nations.

The Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Vladimir Kalamanov directed Zurab Tsereteli a letter of greetings with the high international award which is “ surely deserved and proves the high international prestige of the Russian Academy of Arts headed by Zurab Tsereteli, as well as his big personal contribution to the multisided Academy activity”.

The UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura will present the UNESCO Picasso Gold Medal to Zurab Tsereteli at the exhibition of his works of art in the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris dedicated to the 250th Anniversary of the Academy.

The UNESCO Picasso Gold Medal, one of the most prestigious awards in fine arts, was set up in 1981 in honor of the great master and designed by another celebrated Spanish artist Joan Miro.
