The Creative Workshops of the Russian Academy of Arts were set up in 1947 to be the final stage in the system of academic art education: school - institute of higher education - creative workshops of the Academy. In 1961 in St. Petersburg there were established three academic workshops including the one for monumental painting. For more than 50 years, the Creative Workshop of Monumental Painting in St. Petersburg has been headed by the People's Artist of the USSR, Academician and Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Hero of the Socialist Labor, Laureate of the Lenin, Stalin and three USSR and RF State Prizes Andrey A. Mylnikov (1919-2012). At present, the Workshop is being headed by his daughter and pupil, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Vera Mylnikova.

Since its foundation, several generations of artists - graduates of the Workshop  have become Honored Artists, winners of the State Prize, academicians, professors. The transfer of the accumulated experience from generation to generation by artists from St. Petersburg is a clear example of the continuity, which is based on  preservation and development of the established school.  In works of young artists the themes and traditions of the Workshop acquire a new reading and the exhibition at the Russian Academy of Arts is a perfect proof of it.
